Teachers are held to such a “high standard”, that my friend is called a “double standard”. I can see your faces now; some people saying “YESSS” and others “WELL THAT’S APART OF THE JOB!” Let me ask you this, do you know what it means to “Burn out”?
As a teacher, we are often encouraged to put our student’s needs first. We are constantly reminded that it’s a thankless job and we need to get the work done; learn how to sacrifice to get it all done.
Listen, I can go on and on but we would be here forever.
Let me tell you a story about what happened to a teacher I know and by a teacher I know, I mean ME.
A few years ago, I began feeling very ill; everything started very subtly. Then almost immediately, I became weak, dizzy, and lethargic with shortness of breath, and my Educator's life as I knew it all came to a screeching halt. Was I going to die?
I couldn’t be sick-sick like for real sick. I did everything “right”, I followed God’s plan for my life, and I was unwavering in my profession so this clearly could not be happening to me.
Then reality hit, I was sick and I needed help!
It was at that moment I realized something had to change.
Almost immediately I decided that my Educator life as I knew it was over. The overworking, neglecting my health, the guilty feelings STOPPED. I NEVER second-guessed my decision. Learning how to RELAX was activated.
I felt a release.
Now, I do what I can and everything else will get done even if it isn’t me who does “the thing”.
So what’s my point?
Sometimes you have to put yourself first.
You can still be an EXCELLENT TEACHER even when you say NO!
